Peter Golenbock on the writing of BUMS

Writing Bums was like writing scripture -- I discovered very early in the interviewing process that I was not writing about a baseball team, but rather a religion. The Brooklyn Dodgers were a sacred cult. Instead of prophets, I would be writing about religious figures with names like Dook, Oisk, Scoonge, Pee Wee and Campy. The house of worship was called Ebbets Field.

Bums records the memories of those Gods, and also those of their worshipers. And because of the Jackie Robinson story, it also is a recitation of one of the most important moments in American history.
