In the Country of Brooklyn

Extra Chapters

One vexing problem of writing a book like this is that I cannot figure out how long it's going to be when I'm finished.  In this case it turned out to be more than a hundred pages too long, and as a result my editor, Doug Grad, had the unenviable task of doing the cutting, because I just didn't have the heart to do it.  As a result, chapters which I consider precious and powerful were cut, usually for the same reason: they did not have enough of a connection to Brooklyn.  A couple chapters were cut because they duplicated others.  To Donald Hall, Gene Brock, Charlotte Phillips, and Bruce Bender, my sincerest apologies.  If it's any consolation, it was a stab to the heart with every excision.
